Managerial Capabilities and Performance
Recent research from Cranfield School of
Management released in February 2010, has found that effective
implementation of Investors in People is a key driver when
determining the performance of managers.
The study analysed financial performance information from
Companies House, case studies and a survey of over 400 employers.
This independent report concluded that working with Investors in
People increases profitability by enhancing managerial skills,
knowledge and experience, improving the effectiveness of management
development practices and increasing the performance of
managers.
Delivering real results
How can your leadership team ensure managers have the capability
they need to bring the organisations vision to life? The role of
junior and middle managers is often vital here. They are regularly
at the front line, expected to translate the vision into reality,
plus motivate their team to deliver results. Investors in People's
approach features four key areas that will improve management
capabilities for organisations of all sizes and sectors:
• A strong organisational learning culture which is reflected in
values that encourage learning, development and innovation
• Effective managerial development practices that increase job
satisfaction and motivation; reduce employee turnover; reduce
employees' stress levels and improve succession planning
• High-performance managerial conditions, for example, clarity
of role and performance expectations alongside performance feedback
or availability of appropriate resources
• Suitable levels of managerial discretion or autonomy that give
managers the freedom and opportunities to use and develop their own
judgement
