The Investors in People Awards 2025 - Finalist Case Study

Nominated for The Award for Driving Positive ESG Impact (up to 4,999+ employees)

Why did you enter the Investors in People 2025 Awards?

We entered the IIP 2025 Awards because our journey as Chartwells at Brunel University of London has always been about people—their ideas, their courage, and their power to make change happen. When the world shifted during the pandemic, our team didn’t simply adapt; they reimagined what was possible. They built something bold and meaningful: a new way of serving students that puts sustainability, digital innovation, and community at its heart.

The Ultimate Convenience model was born from listening—listening to students who wanted flexibility and purpose, and to our own people who wanted to make a difference. Together, we transformed not just how we operate, but how we think. Every colleague became part of that story: learning new skills, developing confidence in digital tools, and shaping a service that reflects the values we share.

Entering the IIP Awards felt like the right way to celebrate this transformation. It’s a chance to honour the human spirit behind the innovation—the chefs who champion sustainable menus, the managers who nurture growth, and the teams who show that care and creativity can change an entire culture.

These awards stand for everything we believe in: that people are the heartbeat of progress, and that investment in people is investment in the future. Our entry is not about recognition alone; it’s about sharing a story of purpose-led change driven by a team who chose to lead with empathy, courage, and belief in one another.

What has it meant to you, your team, and your organisation to be shortlisted for an Investors in People 2025 Award?

Being shortlisted for an IIP Award has been an emotional and uplifting moment for our Chartwells team at Brunel University of London. It’s more than recognition—it’s a celebration of every person who helped turn a challenge into something extraordinary. When we transformed our operations after the pandemic, our people were at the centre of everything. They learned new skills, embraced digital innovation, and built a culture where sustainability and compassion thrive side by side.

To see that effort acknowledged on a national stage has filled our teams with pride. For many, it’s the first time their creativity, resilience, and community impact have been recognised beyond the campus. It has reminded us that every role matters—whether it’s a chef inspiring students through the Social Kitchen, a barista championing sustainable choices, or a manager supporting colleagues’ career growth.

The shortlisting has also brought our team closer together. There’s a renewed sense of unity and pride—a feeling that we’re part of something bigger. It has inspired conversations about what’s next, encouraging everyone to share ideas and keep improving.

Most of all, it’s affirmed what we’ve always believed: that our strength lies in our people. Their compassion, commitment, and belief in making a positive difference are what define us. Being shortlisted tells them their hard work is seen, valued, and celebrated—and that’s the greatest reward of all.

What would it mean to your organisation to win an Investors in People 2025 Award?

Winning an IIP Award would be a deeply meaningful moment for every member of the Chartwells at Brunel University of London family. It would stand as a tribute to the people who turned a time of uncertainty into a story of growth, purpose, and pride. It would honour our chefs, servers, managers, and digital teams—the people who made sustainability, innovation, and care come to life every single day.

For us, this award wouldn’t just symbolise success; it would represent validation of a belief that has guided us from the beginning—that when you invest in people, you unlock limitless potential. Every achievement we’ve celebrated—from cutting food waste in half, to training 100% of our team, to creating opportunities for students to give back—has been powered by the hearts and hands of those who care deeply about their impact.

An IIP win would strengthen our voice as a purpose-led organisation and inspire even more people to see catering not just as a service, but as a force for good. It would help us attract new talent, deepen our partnerships, and continue to inspire our teams to lead change across the Compass network and beyond.

But above all, it would belong to our people. It would tell them that their courage to innovate, their care for others, and their belief in a shared purpose have created something truly special. Winning would be more than an award—it would be a celebration of who we are and what we stand for: people making a difference, together.

How important is it for your organisation to be a part of the Investors in People community and engage in awards and events like this one?

Being part of the Investors in People community is incredibly important to us—it connects directly to who we are and what we believe in. At Chartwells Brunel, our success has never just been measured in numbers or outcomes, but in the growth, confidence, and purpose of our people. The IIP community gives us a space to celebrate that, to learn from others, and to continuously raise our standards of what “good” looks like in people development and leadership.

IIP provides more than recognition; it offers inspiration. Through its network of like-minded organisations, we gain new perspectives, share best practice, and challenge ourselves to keep evolving. It reminds us that investing in people is not a one-time achievement—it’s a lifelong commitment. Engaging in events and awards like this one allows our teams to see that their work is part of a wider movement—one that values trust, wellbeing, innovation, and community impact as drivers of success.

For our teams, being part of the IIP community reinforces pride and purpose. It shows that their dedication to excellence in service, sustainability, and inclusion places them among the very best. For our leaders, it’s a constant source of motivation—to keep listening, learning, and leading with empathy.

Ultimately, IIP helps us stay connected to what matters most: our people. It encourages us to keep stretching our ambitions, to celebrate achievements, and to make meaningful change together. Being part of this community reminds us that when organisations invest in their people, they don’t just build better workplaces—they help build a better world.
