GMI Construction Group PLC

The Investors in People Awards 2025 - Finalist Case Study

Nominated for The Award for UK Employer of the Year: Silver (50-249 people)

Why did you enter the Investors in People 2025 Awards?

At GMI Construction Group Plc, we entered the Investors in People Awards because it represents the highest recognition of what we are most proud of: putting people at the heart of our business. For us, IIP is more than accreditation—it is a benchmark that challenges us to keep raising the standard of what it means to be a modern, progressive employer in construction.

We are proud finalists in the Best in Silver category because our journey reflects exactly what Silver accreditation stands for—a strong, deliberate, and people-first strategy that goes beyond compliance to create lasting impact. The Awards give us the opportunity to showcase our progress, celebrate our colleagues, and benchmark ourselves against the very best.

The construction industry faces challenges—skills shortages, diversity gaps, wellbeing concerns, and the demand for digital transformation. These shaped our decision to transform our people strategy around three pillars:

•Wellbeing and Inclusion – You Matter prioritises mental health and inclusion through trauma-informed training, mental health first aiders, and flexible working.
•Talent Development – Elevate doubles our apprentice and graduate intake, creating clear pathways to future leadership.
•Innovation and Social Value – Over £5m invested in digital transformation, alongside pioneering AI safety projects, outreach, and sustainability initiatives.

What makes our plan unique is that it is not a collection of initiatives, but a cohesive, long-term strategy built on people, purpose, and progress. We are not only responding to challenges—we are shaping a construction workforce that is resilient, inclusive, and future-ready.

What has it meant to you, your team, and your organisation to be shortlisted for an Investors in People 2025 Award?

Being shortlisted for an Investors in People Award is an incredible moment of pride for everyone at GMI Construction Group Plc. It is more than recognition—it validates the culture we have worked hard to build and the values we live by every day.

For our people team, it marks a milestone in embedding wellbeing, inclusion, and talent development into the fabric of GMI. It has given us the chance to reflect on progress, celebrate the impact of our initiatives, and benchmark ourselves against the best employers across all sectors.

For colleagues across the business, being a finalist has created real pride and ownership. Many have directly shaped programmes such as You Matter and Elevate—initiatives designed not just for them, but with them. National recognition reinforces that their voices matter and that GMI is committed to a workplace where everyone can thrive.

For the organisation, it is a powerful reminder that our “Building for a Better Future” vision extends beyond projects to building futures for our people, communities, and the wider industry. It signals to clients, partners, and future recruits that GMI is a purpose-driven company with people at its heart.

Ultimately, recognition from Investors in People is both a celebration and a catalyst—inspiring us to keep raising the bar and set new standards for people-first leadership in construction.

What would it mean to your organisation to win an Investors in People 2025 Award?

Winning an Investors in People Award would be a defining moment for GMI Construction Group Plc. It would not only recognise the commitment we have made to our people, but also affirm that our people-first strategy is setting the benchmark for excellence in our industry.

For our colleagues, it would be a powerful symbol that their wellbeing, growth, and contribution are truly valued. Many of our initiatives—You Matter, Elevate, and our inclusion programmes—were co-created with our people. To see these celebrated with such a prestigious award would give every employee a sense of ownership in our success.

For our clients and partners, winning would demonstrate that GMI is more than a construction company—we are a responsible, progressive employer that builds with purpose, integrity, and care for our communities.

For the wider construction sector, it would send a clear message: that it is possible to deliver outstanding projects while putting people at the centre. As the industry faces urgent challenges—skills shortages, diversity gaps, and wellbeing concerns—an IIP Award would showcase GMI as a model of how culture can drive long-term sustainability and performance.

Ultimately, winning would not be the end of our journey, but a catalyst to go even further. It would inspire us to continue shaping a future where construction is more inclusive, innovative, and resilient—and where our people remain the foundation of everything we achieve.

How important is it for your organisation to be a part of the Investors in People community and engage in awards and events like this one?

Being part of the Investors in People community is hugely important to GMI Construction Group Plc. It connects us with like-minded organisations that share our belief that people are the driving force behind sustainable success. Engaging in awards and events provides us with the opportunity to benchmark our progress, learn from others, and celebrate best practice across industries.

For us, IIP is not just about accreditation—it is about being part of a movement that raises the bar for how organisations value, support, and develop their people. By participating in the Awards, we not only showcase our own achievements, but also contribute to wider conversations about wellbeing, inclusion, and the future of work.
In a sector like construction, where challenges such as skills shortages and diversity gaps remain pressing, being part of the IIP community allows us to share our journey, learn from others, and influence change. It reinforces to our people, clients, and partners that we are committed to continuous improvement and to leading by example.

Ultimately, engagement with IIP events and awards keeps us inspired, accountable, and connected. It ensures that our ambition to “Build for a Better Future” is continually strengthened by the insight, recognition, and collaboration of a community dedicated to putting people first.
