Hay & Kilner

The Investors in People Awards 2025 - Finalist Case Study

Hay & Kilner

Nominated for The Award for UK Employer of the Year: Silver (50-249 people)

Why did you enter the Investors in People 2025 Awards?

We entered because we believe that our people‐centred approach and continuous investment in our team isn’t just good business, it defines who we are. As a regionally‐based law firm with ambitions to grow in a competitive market, we made a strategic commitment to being an employer of choice, not just a provider of legal services. By entering the IIP Awards we wanted to benchmark ourselves against the best, celebrate the progress we’ve made, and send a clear message to our people, our clients and our community that our culture of growth, development and inclusion is as important as our commercial results.

What has it meant to you, your team, and your organisation to be shortlisted for an Investors in People 2025 Award?

Being shortlisted has already had a powerful impact across our Firm. For our team it means visible recognition of the hard work they put in every day, from new starters, to our vital support staff, to our partners. It has created a moment of collective pride and reinforced the message that our values, being supportive, dynamic and exceptional matter. For the Firm, it raises our profile as an employer regionally and beyond. When someone sees Hay & Kilner shortlisted for a national award, they understand that we see our colleagues as our most valuable asset. It re-energises us internally and strengthens our external proposition to clients, talent and the broader community.

What would it mean to your organisation to win an Investors in People 2025 Award?

Winning would be a significant milestone. It would validate our people strategy, provide independent endorsement of our culture, and strengthen our position in attracting, retaining and developing top talent. It would enable us to share our story more widely, internally to deepen engagement, and externally to further enhance our reputation as a progressive, values-driven law firm. Ultimately, a win would fuel momentum, inspiring our team to continue growing, innovating and making a difference, for each other, for clients, and for the North East community.

How important is it for your organisation to be a part of the Investors in People community and engage in awards and events like this one?

Being part of the IIP community is central to how we shape our people strategy. It brings access to best practice, gives us benchmarks against which to measure ourselves, and fosters a culture of continuous improvement. Engaging in awards and events isn’t just about recognition, it’s about learning, networking, sharing and evolving. For us as a law firm, it means staying ahead of evolving workplace expectations, embracing new ways of working and ensuring that our culture remains both high-performing and inclusive. Being part of the IIP community helps us maintain that discipline, stay connected and keep improving.
