Liberty Wines

The Investors in People Awards 2025 - Finalist Case Study

Liberty Wines

Nominated for The Award for UK Employer of the Year: Silver (250+ people)

Why did you enter the Investors in People 2025 Awards?

We were honoured to be recognised as one of IIP’s leading Silver-accredited organisations and delighted to be invited to take part in these awards.

We have worked hard to create a workplace built on our values (RIPE – Respect, Integrity, Passion and Excellence) where people can thrive and feel part of a community. In the last five years, our team has grown by over 100 people, and through social clubs, peer-voted RIPE awards, and committees focused on EDI, Charity, and the Environment, we’ve fostered meaningful connections and brought people together via a shared sense of purpose.

Listening to our teams shapes so much of what we do. Using feedback informed by the IIP assessment guidelines, we’ve introduced initiatives such as enhanced parental leave, flexible holiday options, affordable car leasing, coaching programmes for management and updated performance reviews

Our commitment to nurturing talent is reflected in the many long-serving team members who’ve progressed within the business. By actively recognising innovation and hard work, we’ve built a culture that truly supports diverse, fulfilling career paths.

Entering the IIP 2025 Awards allows us to formally recognise our team’s collective effort in creating a great place to work. Having been selected as a finalist shows what is possible when you listen to your team and shape a workplace around authentic company values.

What has it meant to you, your team, and your organisation to be shortlisted for an Investors in People 2025 Award?

Being shortlisted for this award recognises the amazing work of our small, yet mighty, People Team and every department within Liberty Wines. We all care deeply about fostering a brilliant working environment and are extremely proud to have our efforts recognised.

For our teams, being nominated shows that their voices have driven real, lasting change. In 2023, we aligned our people survey with the IIP assessment framework, the feedback from which has directly shaped many of the initiatives behind our shortlisting. Now in its third year, the survey continues to ensure our people lead the way in shaping our workplace. Change for our team, by our team.

Since our founding in 1997 our vision has been clear: to be the leading quality wine distributor, with the best wines, the best service, and the best people. Being shortlisted is a powerful validation of the progress we’ve made towards achieving this vision and has inspired us to push ourselves even further.

What would it mean to your organisation to win an Investors in People 2025 Award?

Receiving this award would be a significant milestone for us. Liberty Wines has won multiple awards for its wines and service over its near 30-year history. To win an award for how we support and develop our people would be a proud moment for the whole organisation, reflecting our dedication to not only having the best wines and service, but also the best people.

Our people strategy has always been shaped by team feedback and a commitment to stay true to our values. Winning would give a clear message to our people that their contributions matter, and that together, we’ve built a workplace we can all be proud of.

How important is it for your organisation to be a part of the Investors in People community and engage in awards and events like this one?

We have been accredited by Investors in People since 2011, and being part of this community has been invaluable. The IIP guidelines and accreditation process have enabled us to challenge ourselves and continually improve the way we work. We value how our IIP practitioner takes the time to understand our business, helping us introduce fresh thinking while remaining grounded in our company values.

We are proud to be part of a network that shares our ambition to build a workplace where people can truly thrive. The process of becoming IIP accredited encourages honest reflection. The reports and conversations with our IIP practitioners have sparked stimulating debates and supported our continual drive for excellence.

We know that our people are at the heart of our success. Being IIP accredited and part of a community focused on continuous learning is vital to being an employer of choice, enabling us to attract and retain the best talent.
