We entered the Investors in People 2025 Awards because we wanted to benchmark ourselves against the very best employers and demonstrate our commitment to staff development and wellbeing through external validation.
As a school, we’ve spent years building a culture where people genuinely matter. We’ve implemented robust wellbeing initiatives, created meaningful professional development opportunities, and worked tirelessly to ensure workload is manageable and sustainable. However, we recognised that internal pride alone wasn’t enough – we wanted objective assessment of our practices against national standards of excellence.
Entering these awards challenged us to articulate what we do, why we do it, and the impact it has. The process itself was valuable, forcing us to reflect critically on our strengths and areas for growth. It helped us see our journey through fresh eyes and appreciate the systematic, embedded nature of our approach.
We also entered to raise the profile of what’s possible in education. Schools face significant workforce challenges, and we wanted to demonstrate that it is possible to create an environment where staff flourish, even within the constraints and pressures of the education sector. By entering, we hoped to inspire other schools and contribute to elevating standards across the profession.
Additionally, we wanted to give our staff the recognition they deserve. Our team works incredibly hard, often going above and beyond for our students. Entering prestigious national awards was our way of saying “thank you” and showing that their dedication doesn’t go unnoticed.
Ultimately, we entered because we believe in continuous improvement and wanted to prove – to ourselves and others – that investing in people delivers outstanding results.
We are honoured to be shortlisted for both the Employer of the Year award in the Platinum category as well as the Well-being award. Schools can be an extremely busy and stressful environment, but by working together and considering the needs of our staff, we have created an environment where all can thrive, feel supported and, above all, enjoy their working lives.
We entered these awards to celebrate the progress we’ve made in putting our people at the heart of everything we do. Our commitment goes beyond policy – it’s embedded in our daily practice and culture. We recognise that when staff feel valued, supported and empowered, they bring their very best to our students and community.
Our journey to Platinum status reflects years of dedicated focus on staff wellbeing, professional development, and creating meaningful opportunities for everyone to contribute and grow. We’ve worked hard to build a culture where voices are heard, workload is manageable, and work-life balance is respected.
From flexible working arrangements to robust mental health support, from genuine collaboration to celebrating achievements, we’ve developed initiatives that make a real difference. But more importantly, we’ve fostered a sense of belonging – where colleagues support one another and leadership is accessible and responsive.
Being shortlisted validates our approach and motivates us to continue improving. We entered these awards not just for recognition, but to demonstrate that investing in people isn’t just good practice – it’s essential for creating an outstanding educational environment where both staff and students flourish.
Winning an Investors in People 2025 Award would be profoundly meaningful to our organisation on multiple levels.
Most importantly, it would validate the work of our community. Working in a very deprived area of Southampton, where our community is often unnoticed and overlooked, this national recognition would instil yet more pride in a school which does its absolute best for its children and, therefore, the community. Our staff, students, and families face challenges daily that many cannot imagine, yet they demonstrate extraordinary resilience, commitment, and hope. Winning would shine a spotlight on their achievements and send a powerful message that excellence exists everywhere – not just in privileged areas.
For our staff, victory would be the ultimate recognition of their dedication and professionalism. It would affirm that their daily efforts to support colleagues, nurture students, and strengthen our community are not just valued locally but celebrated nationally. This external validation matters deeply when you work in challenging circumstances – it reinforces that what you do is exceptional and worthy of the highest accolades.
Winning would also enhance our ability to attract and retain outstanding staff. In an area where recruitment can be challenging, being an award-winning employer would demonstrate unequivocally that we offer something special. It would help us continue building the strong, committed team that our students deserve.
Furthermore, it would inspire our wider community. Parents, local organisations, and other schools would see what’s possible when you genuinely invest in people. It would elevate aspirations and prove that deprivation doesn’t diminish excellence – in fact, it often drives it.
Finally, winning would fuel our determination to keep improving. It wouldn’t be an endpoint but a springboard for even greater achievements, benefiting our staff, students, and community for years to come.
Being part of the Investors in People community is absolutely vital to our organisation. It provides us with a framework for excellence, a network of like-minded employers, and the external accountability that drives continuous improvement.
Engaging in awards and events like this keeps us connected to best practice beyond our immediate context. In education, particularly in challenging areas, there’s a risk of becoming insular – focusing solely on our immediate pressures and losing sight of broader standards and innovations. The Investors in People community prevents this by exposing us to fresh thinking, different approaches, and inspiring examples from diverse sectors.
We have been extremely fortunate to work with our appraiser, Cath Parish – an individual who has always believed in the Redbridge ethos. Cath exemplifies what it means to be a true ‘Investor in People’. She has challenged us constructively, never accepting “good enough” when we could be better. Her external perspective has been invaluable, helping us see our blind spots and recognise strengths we might have taken for granted. She has provided us with the critical external eyes needed to continue developing and evolving, while always respecting and championing what makes us unique.
Having someone like Cath walk alongside us through this journey has transformed how we approach people development. She hasn’t simply assessed us against standards – she’s invested in understanding our community, our challenges, and our aspirations. Her belief in what we’re achieving has reinforced our confidence, while her challenges have sharpened our practice.
Awards and events like this also give us opportunities to celebrate openly, share our story, and learn from others facing similar challenges. They remind us we’re not alone and that investing in people is a collective endeavour that benefits everyone when we share knowledge and support one another.
