The Investors in People Awards 2025 - Finalist Case Study

Nominated for The Award for Excellence in Building Purpose-Driven Impact (up to 250 employees), The Award for UK Employer of the Year: Silver (50-249 people)

Why did you enter the Investors in People 2025 Awards?

At YMCA Cheshire, we entered The Investors in People Awards because we see it as more than an opportunity for recognition; it’s a reflection of our journey of transformation. Over the last three years, we’ve evolved from a local charity serving Crewe to a county-wide organization impacting lives across Cheshire. This growth has not been about numbers, but about deepening purpose: restoring dignity through housing, building community through youth services, and empowering people to create better futures.

Investors in People has been a vital compass in this journey. Pursuing accreditation gave us a framework to build a stronger, more values-driven culture, one where every member of staff, volunteer, and resident feels part of something bigger. Entering the awards allowed us to celebrate that progress, recognize the people who made it possible, and benchmark ourselves against organizations equally committed to excellence and purpose.

Most importantly, our entry was a way of saying thank you to every person who helped turn vision into reality. This award embodies what we strive for daily: leadership through compassion and impact through purpose.

What has it meant to you, your team, and your organisation to be shortlisted for an Investors in People 2025 Award?

Being shortlisted has been deeply affirming for everyone across YMCA Cheshire. It has validated years of hard work and bold decisions: from changing our name and strategic direction to embedding people-first practices across every layer of the organization.

For our staff, it’s been a proud moment that recognizes the heart they pour into their work each day. Many joined during our transition period and have witnessed firsthand how far we have come. For them, this shortlisting is proof that their contribution matters. It has also inspired renewed energy, with teams taking even greater ownership of their roles and pride in our shared mission.

For leadership, it has reinforced the importance of staying true to our purpose, even during periods of change. It has prompted reflection and celebration, not only on what we have achieved but also on who we have become: a confident, compassionate, and forward-looking charity.

For residents and volunteers, it’s been an emotional milestone. Many have expressed pride in “their YMCA” being recognized on a national platform. Seeing their stories of transformation contribute to this recognition reminds us why we do what we do.

What would it mean to your organisation to win an Investors in People 2025 Award?

Winning this award would be a defining moment for YMCA Cheshire, not just a recognition of impact, but a validation of a vision rooted in purpose and courage. It would demonstrate that a local charity, born in Crewe over a century ago, can evolve to lead innovation in housing, community engagement, and people development across the county.

An award from Investors in People would affirm that our focus on empowerment of both staff and service users is creating real change. It would strengthen morale, reinforce our reputation with partners and funders, and open new opportunities for collaboration and investment. Most importantly, it would inspire the people we serve, those who have faced homelessness, hardship, or hopelessness, to believe that transformation is possible.

Winning would not mark the end of a journey, but the continuation of a new chapter built on everything we have learned: that sustainable impact begins when purpose and people align.

How important is it for your organisation to be a part of the Investors in People community and engage in awards and events like this one?

Being part of the Investors in People community connects YMCA Cheshire to a network of organizations that share our belief that people are the foundation of progress. The opportunity to engage in awards and events creates space for reflection, learning, and exchange. It also helps us refine our culture and bring back ideas that strengthen how we support both staff and service users.

These platforms also offer visibility and credibility, positioning us not just as a local service provider but as a thought leader within the housing sector. The Investors in People community keeps us accountable, inspired, and connected. It reminds us that our purpose is sustained through people, and that by investing in them, we invest in the future of every community we serve.
