YMCA Heart of England

The Investors in People Awards 2025 - Finalist Case Study

Nominated for The Award for UK Employer of the Year: Silver (50-249 people)

Why did you enter the Investors in People 2025 Awards?

At YMCA Heart of England, we believe that our people are the heartbeat of everything we do. We entered the Investors in People Awards because we wanted to celebrate how far our people have brought us. Our move from Bronze to Silver wasn’t about chasing a badge; it was about proving to ourselves that when you invest deeply in your people, real transformation follows.

Over the last 18 months, we’ve lived that belief. Our new five-year strategic plan (2025 – 2030) was shaped through 12 consultations across multiple sites and shifts, so every concierge, housekeeper, youth worker, and volunteer could help set our direction. Young people helped too, through creative sessions that made sure their voices guided our priorities.

This Award entry isn’t a marketing exercise – it’s a thank you. A thank you to the people who made time, shared ideas, and challenged us to grow. We entered because we wanted to tell that story: one of shared ownership, transparency, and pride. It’s our way of saying, “This is who we are now… and this is just the start.”

What has it meant to you, your team, and your organisation to be shortlisted for an Investors in People 2025 Award?

When we found out we’d been shortlisted, the reaction across YMCA Heart of England was pure joy, and truthfully, a bit of disbelief. For many of our staff, who work long shifts supporting residents or leading youth projects, this recognition felt deeply personal. It said, “Someone sees the difference you make.”

Being shortlisted has sparked pride and unity. Teams who might not always cross paths -housing, youth, nursery, facilities – have celebrated together. It’s reminded everyone that their work, no matter the role, contributes to a much bigger mission.

For leadership, it reaffirmed that involving people in decisions works. For staff, it confirmed that they’re part of something respected and impactful. For our residents and young people, it shows they’re supported by an organisation that truly invests in its people, because strong people build stronger communities.

What would it mean to your organisation to win an Investors in People 2025 Award?

Winning would mean more than recognition; it would be proof that our culture of care and co-creation works. It would honour the hundreds of staff and volunteers who’ve shaped our journey from “good intentions” to structured, measurable success.

An IIP Award would amplify our voice nationally, showing that a regional charity can achieve operational excellence and remain deeply human. It would remind every person who helped write our strategic plan, who engaged in our People & Culture consultation, who supported a resident in crisis – that their effort built something exceptional.

Winning would serve as a public testament to the values that guide us: excellence, compassion, integrity, inspire, and belief – showing that when people are empowered and cared for, they can achieve extraordinary outcomes. It would inspire our teams and motivate us to continue our journey toward Gold IIP accreditation.

Ultimately, it would confirm that investing in people is more than an organisational priority; it’s one that runs through every layer of the organisation and honours the foundation upon which we were built. We work to make a difference, not simply by capturing measurable outcomes, but by ensuring that we can support individuals to make sustainable changes, and that the beginnings of their journey do not determine how that journey ends. By enabling young people, residents, and communities, as well as our staff and volunteers, we are able to transform lives and impact neighbourhoods, families, and communities for generations to come.

How important is it for your organisation to be a part of the Investors in People community and engage in awards and events like this one?

Being part of the IIP community is central to our mission of continuous growth and accountability. It keeps us connected to a network of like-minded organisations committed to empowering people and improving lives.

Through IIP we’ve strengthened our wellbeing support, introduced pastoral care, invested in training, and refined governance so accountability feels empowering, not intimidating. Events like these connect us to others who share that purpose. We learn, we benchmark, we celebrate.

It’s influenced initiatives like our People & Culture Strategy, which defines the behaviours our staff created themselves, and our commitment to staff safety, governance excellence, and mental health support.

For YMCA Heart of England, that alignment of purpose and people is both inspiring and essential.
