Apprenticeships are on the rise. Age is not a restriction, in fact almost half of apprentices in the UK are aged 25 and over, so how can we add as much value to the journey as possible? We’re sitting down with Emily Austin, Director at the Association of Apprentices and Investors in People CEO Paul Devoy to deep dive into what employers can and should be doing to make every apprentices journey the best it can possibly be.
CEO, Investors in People
Paul is the Chief Executive of Investors in People (IIP). In 2016, Paul led the buyout of IIP from the UK Government and the organisation is now a Community Interest Company. IIP's purpose is to Make Work Better. Investors in People works with over 10,000 organisations, providing digital diagnostic tools, advice, support and assessment against their internationally recognised Frameworks. Our network of 350 skilled and experienced Consultants work with organisations across 70 countries, but predominantly in the UK.
Prior to leading Investors in People, Paul was a Director at the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, an executive non-departmental body that offers guidance on skills and employment issues in the UK. He led the development and implementation of strategic programmes to create sustainable skills solutions with joint investment from industry and government.
He previously worked in the Scottish Prison Service for 4 years leading on change management programmes. His early career was in the Civil Service. Paul studied Human Resource Management, graduating in 1994. He is a Chartered Fellow of Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute.

I am super passionate about mental health and wellbeing more widely at work, and the role employers can take in improving this for their teams. I started my career off with a BSc in Biological Sciences but soon discovered that humans at work are the most fascinating! A few years later I gained an MSc in Human Resource Management from the London School of Economics and moved into my dream role at Investors in People.
