Investors in People calls for health and wellbeing to be a workplace priority

  •   A series of exciting events aimed at informing stakeholders, the IIP community and beyond about the business benefits of catering for employee wellbeing

The way employees feel in the workplace has a tangible impact on their productivity and performance as well as their personal lives. It is the responsibility of all employers to consider employee wellbeing when developing a people management strategy.

On 26th October, Investors in People held a Health and Wellbeing Awareness community networking event in association with South West College at its Dungannon Campus. Attended by eighty-five people and fifty organisations from across the IIP Community, the session presented topical opinions from people like Action Mental Health Chief Executive David Babington. Action Mental Health have been at the forefront of developing mental health support in all areas, from eating disorders to workplace stress.

Speaking about South West College’s approach to employee health and wellbeing, Eimear Rushe, HR Manager at SWC said: “At South West College we firmly believe in creating a culture which empowers staff to maintain their own health and wellbeing whilst also providing them with the opportunity to achieve their full potential.”

Attendees heard similarly insightful speeches from a range of industry leaders, including GRAHAM’s Michael Smyth who outlined the business benefits of engaging with IIP’s Health and Wellbeing framework, announcing an uptake of 50% in wellbeing activities and a 20% reduction in the number of smokers.

Going forward

IIP has a full agenda ahead in terms of promoting the importance of making health and wellbeing a workplace priority.

A Health and Wellbeing breakfast is to be held on November 2nd, where attendees will hear stories from organisations like the Royal Household who will be sharing their experiences of supporting employee health and wellbeing in the workplace. Discussions will centre around actionable tools to assist organisations create development plans for creating their own strategies.

Equally exciting is CEO Paul Devoy’s upcoming speaking engagement at a luncheon at the House of Lords sponsored by Lord David Blunkett. Jointly hosted by the Society for Occupational Medicine and the Carnegie Trust, the event on 7th November will seek to discuss the strategies and resulting benefits of ensuring work is a force for good in the lives of employees.

CEO Paul Devoy said “as an organisation, IIP has focused a lot of attention on developing our Health and Wellbeing Framework to reflect the most up-to-date understanding on how psychological, social and physical health are impacted by our working environment. It is estimated that workplace absence costs the UK as much as £18bn in lost productivity every year. This statistic makes it clear that, beyond being the right thing to do for your team, caring for employee wellbeing can support organisational productivity.”
