Employee Value Proposition
Building an employee value proposition that reflects reality
Your EVP is the sum of what your people actually experience at work.
An Employee Value Proposition (EVP) describes the total return an employee receives: the work itself, the culture, the development, the recognition and the benefits, in exchange for their skills, capabilities and commitment.
Every organisation has an EVP, whether or not anyone has written one. The difference between one that happens by default and one built deliberately shows up in retention, recruitment, engagement and performance.
Why it matters now
Your EVP is your most powerful retention tool
An EVP is arguably the most effective tool an HR team or business leader has to attract, retain and engage the right people.
What makes a strong one has shifted, though. A competitive salary alone hasn't been enough for some time. People expect their workplace to reflect their values, support their development and fit around their lives, and organisations that haven't kept pace tend to see it in their turnover.
The encouraging part is that most of what makes an EVP compelling already exists inside your organisation. The work is in understanding what your people actually experience and value.

This is where Investors in People comes in
Evidence-based. Practitioner-led. Built around your people.
We give you a structured way to understand and strengthen your EVP, based on talking to your people directly rather than handing you a template.
Over 35 years of working with organisations, we've seen plenty of EVP fads come and go. What endures is consistent: organisations that listen to their people, act on what they hear, and build a working environment that reflects those commitments.
Here is how we approach it:
01
Understanding what your people actually experience
We listen to everyone in your organisation and speak directly with a representative cross-section. What we tell you about what your people value, and what frustrates them, comes from evidence rather than assumption.
02
Defining what your culture genuinely offers
We help you move past surface-level perks to the real drivers of engagement and retention in your organisation and your sector.
03
Building an EVP grounded in what people tell you
You get a clear picture of where your EVP is strong, where there’s more to do, and what to prioritise first.

What this looks like in practice
An organisation might offer above-average salaries and a strong pension, and still see turnover in one team without understanding why.
An assessment often surfaces the reason. It might be that the financial side of the package is well regarded, but people in that team feel development opportunities are limited, or that one manager's style sits at odds with the culture elsewhere. Those are the things people rarely raise directly with their own leadership, and they're exactly what an external voice hears.
That's the value of an EVP built on feedback rather than intention. It tells you where to look.
Authentic to your organisation
The five building blocks of a strong EVP
A strong EVP addresses five areas, and each needs to be genuine to your organisation rather than borrowed from a competitor or a trend report.
Fair compensation and benefits
Salary, bonus, pension and benefits that are fair, transparent and tailored to what your workforce actually needs.
Lifelong career development
Clear opportunities for growth that everyone understands, with genuine alignment between individual ambitions and where the organisation is heading.
Flexible policies and ways of working
Policies that support people’s lives inside and outside work, with flexibility and trust that people can feel.
Thriving culture and excellent leadership
A workplace where people feel engaged, valued and invested in the organisation’s success, with leadership that models the culture rather than describing it.
Recognition and appreciation
Consistent, meaningful recognition beyond the annual review, where contribution is seen at every level.
