Why did you enter the Investors in People 2024 Awards?

On being shortlisted for The Award for Best Culture (up to 250 employees)

North Star Housing has worked extremely hard to create a culture in which our staff can thrive and do their best to deliver services to be proud of. We are, therefore, thrilled to have been named as a finalist in the ‘Best Culture’ category for companies with up to 250 employees.

At North Star, we passionately believe that having a positive, inclusive culture – based on fairness and flexibility – is the foundation for everything we do. It is about creating an open environment in which staff feel free to speak out in the best interests of customers. It is about empowering them to help shape the organisation, so that it never wavers from its core aim of improving lives.

The North Star culture has become embedded in the organisation under the leadership of the previous chief executive, Angela Lockwood, over the past 15 years. Now, new CEO, James Walder, has made it clear that a key objective will be to build on the well-established principles of trust, transparency, and teamwork.

To win the ‘Best Culture’ award, in such a prestigious national setting, would send a powerful message to existing and future staff that North Star is a great place to work.

North Star Housing entered these awards because we see them as the national benchmark for measuring ourselves as an employer committed to investing in our people and enabling them to deliver the best possible services to customers.

We aim to be the best and, winning one of these awards, gives us independent verification that we are leaders in our sector.

What has it meant to you, your team, and your organisation to be shortlisted for an Investors in People 2024 Award?

Being shortlisted for such prestigious awards is an honour and has created a buzz amongst the staff because it is recognition of their hard work in delivering services independently assessed as being of a national standard.

There is real excitement that we have been named as a finalist in two of the most important categories – Employer of the Year and Best Culture – because we place so much emphasis on creating a culture that makes people proud to be part of North Star.

What would it mean to your organisation to win an Investors in People 2024 Award?

To win an Investors in People Award 2024 would be a huge endorsement of the culture that has been created at North Star to build a team committed to making a difference to the lives of those who rely on our services.

It would significantly enhance our reputation, not just in the North East but across the country, as a compassionate, progressive, and fair employer – boosting staff retention and recruiting the best possible candidates to join us on our journey

How important is it for your organisation to be a part of the Investors in People community and engage in awards and events like this one?

North Star passionately believes in the importance of the personal development of its staff. It is, therefore, important that we measure ourselves against the best-known national standard for managing people and leadership.

We have a proud record with Investors in People, going back to 2017 when we became the first housing association in England to achieve platinum status. Since then, we have been proud to retain that status, proving that we are an organisation with an outstanding commitment to staff, tenants and the community.

Having consistently reached that level, we feel it is entirely appropriate to put ourselves forward for the awards, so that we can be judged alongside the best employers in the country.
