National Academy for Educational Leadership Wales - Awards Finalist 2022 Case Study

The National Academy for Educational Leadership has a remit from the Welsh Government to ensure that educational leaders in Wales are equipped to support the well-being of their staff. We know that before you can look after someone else’s well-being, you need to have your own in check!

Our team members are at the heart of everything we do and our well-being policy not only ensures that we as an organisation look after them but also encourages them to find new and innovative ways to look after themselves by fostering a positive culture that appreciates well-being as a key strategic focus.

We understand that well-being is personal to each individual and, as such, we do not enforce a ‘one-size fits all approach’. We have based our well-being strategy around NHS Wales’ five steps to well-being; connect, be active, learn new skills, give to others and mindfulness.

As an organisation we have always understood the importance of health and well-being. However, our focus had been primarily on the leaders we support rather than our team. We realised that, if we wanted to be experts in well-being for others, we’d need to look a bit closer to home first. We also knew that we couldn’t expect people to just take our word for it – we needed to be able to prove that we were leading on well-being! The first thing we did was get in touch with the Investors in Well-being team. They talked us through the accreditation and the sorts of things that assessors looked at when making a decision. We were given some really helpful pointers about the sort of standards we’d need in order to gain accreditation and show the sector that we were serious about well-being!

After working through months of extended lockdowns without a break we noticed the toll it was taking on the team. This made us even more determined to gain accreditation and support our team through such a difficult time. We gained our Investors in Well-being gold accreditation in summer 2021.

Since then, we have not slowed down and are continuously working to embed the policy and practice that we put in place. We have engaged with local health boards to gain a better understanding of how well-being in managed in other, high-pressure sectors and taken back key learning points that have helped us to develop our practice further. We feel that we are able to maintain and grow our approach to well-being because our team members genuinely understand that they are cared for on much more than a professional level; as individuals and as people. This buy in allows us the scope to try new things and find new and innovative approaches to leading well-being.

Tegwen Ellis, Chief Executive of the National Academy for Educational Leadership Wales, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled that the National Academy for Educational Leadership has been nominated for the Investors in Well-being award. Our organisation invests conscientiously in ensuring that all our employees feel well-cared for and supported.

“Gaining the Gold award was absolutely amazing and to be shortlisted now for further recognition just demonstrates further how we place the importance of a well-cared for workforce at the heart of everything we do.”

Academi Genedlaethol ar gyfer Arweinyddiaeth Addysgol Cymru

Mae gan yr Academi Genedlaethol ar gyfer Arweinyddiaeth Addysgol gylch gwaith gan Lywodraeth Cymru i sicrhau bod arweinwyr addysgol yng Nghymru yn gallu cefnogi lles eu staff. Rydyn ni’n gwybod cyn y gallwch chi ofalu am les rhywun arall, mae angen i chi gael eich un chi dan reolaeth!

Mae aelodau ein tîm wrth galon popeth a wnawn ac mae ein polisi lles nid yn unig yn sicrhau ein bod ni fel sefydliad yn gofalu amdanynt ond hefyd yn eu hannog i ddod o hyd i ffyrdd newydd ac arloesol o ofalu amdanynt eu hunain trwy feithrin diwylliant cadarnhaol gyda ffocws strategol allweddol.

Rydym yn deall bod lles yn bersonol i bob unigolyn ac, fel y cyfryw, nid ydym yn gorfodi ‘ymagwedd un ateb i bawb’. Rydym wedi seilio ein strategaeth lles ar bum cam GIG Cymru at les; cysylltu, bod yn egnïol, dysgu sgiliau newydd, rhoi i eraill ac ymwybyddiaeth ofalgar.

Fel sefydliad rydym bob amser wedi deall pwysigrwydd iechyd a lles. Fodd bynnag, roedd ein ffocws wedi bod yn bennaf ar yr arweinwyr yr ydym yn eu cefnogi yn hytrach na’n tîm. Fe wnaethom sylweddoli, os ydym am fod yn arbenigwyr mewn lles i eraill, y byddai angen i ni edrych ychydig yn nes adref yn gyntaf. Roeddem hefyd yn gwybod na allem ddisgwyl i bobl gymryd ein gair ni amdano – roedd angen i ni allu profi ein bod yn arwain ar les! Y peth cyntaf a wnaethom oedd cysylltu â’r tîm Buddsoddwyr mewn Lles. Soniwyd wrthym am yr achrediad a’r mathau o bethau yr edrychodd aseswyr arnynt wrth wneud penderfyniad. Cawsom rai awgrymiadau defnyddiol iawn am y math o safonau y byddai eu hangen arnom er mwyn ennill achrediad a dangos i’r sector ein bod o ddifrif ynglŷn â lles!

Ar ôl gweithio trwy fisoedd o gyfnodau clo estynedig heb egwyl, gwnaethom sylwi’r effaith yr oedd hyn yn cael ar y tîm. Gwnaeth hyn i ni fod yn hyd yn oed yn fwy penderfynol i ennill achrediad a chefnogi ein tîm trwy gyfnod mor anodd. Cawsom ein hachrediad aur Buddsoddwyr mewn Lles yn haf 2021.

Ers hynny, nid ydym wedi arafu ac rydym yn gweithio’n barhaus i wreiddio’r polisi a’r arfer a roddwyd ar waith gennym. Rydym wedi ymgysylltu â byrddau iechyd lleol i gael gwell dealltwriaeth o sut mae lles yn cael ei reoli mewn sectorau eraill o bwysau mawr ac wedi cymryd pwyntiau dysgu allweddol yn ôl sydd wedi ein helpu i ddatblygu ein harfer ymhellach. Teimlwn ein bod yn gallu cynnal a thyfu ein hymagwedd at les oherwydd bod aelodau ein tîm yn deall yn iawn eu bod yn derbyn gofal ar lawer mwy na lefel broffesiynol; fel unigolion ac fel pobl. Mae’r ymrwymiad hwn yn rhoi’r cyfle i ni roi cynnig ar bethau newydd a dod o hyd i ddulliau newydd ac arloesol o arwain lles.

Dywedodd Tegwen Ellis, Prif Weithredwr yr Academi Genedlaethol ar gyfer Arweinyddiaeth Addysgol Cymru: “Rwyf wrth fy modd bod yr Academi Genedlaethol ar gyfer Arweinyddiaeth Addysgol wedi’i henwebu ar gyfer gwobr Buddsoddwyr mewn Lles. Mae ein sefydliad yn buddsoddi’n gydwybodol i sicrhau bod ein holl weithwyr yn teimlo eu bod yn cael gofal a chefnogaeth dda.

“Roedd ennill y wobr Aur yn hollol anhygoel ac mae cyrraedd y rhestr fer nawr am gydnabyddiaeth bellach yn dangos ymhellach sut rydyn ni’n gosod pwysigrwydd gweithlu sy’n derbyn gofal da wrth wraidd popeth rydyn ni’n ei wneud.”
